Typing on the iPhone

Posted by jason

The beginner method of iPhone typing uses the index finger, to get an idea of keyboard placement. The video shows typing with two thumbs after practice, but this is a legacy of the button-based keyboard - you NEED to use your thumbs because you have to hold the buttons down, while keeping the phone balanced. With practice, what's far faster is using one hand with 5 fingers to type - your one hand has far less distance to move to hit each key. I'm 1.5x as fast as was on my blackberry, and getting better. As an added bonus, this looks way cooler than using two thumbs, because it feels more free, and only screen based phones are effective with this input method. Which means that, for now, this method of typing is exclusive to the iPhone.

Hm...after finally picking up an iPhone I have to say my old Sidekick 2 was ultimately a better web/email terminal. Feeling keys is just easier, mainly because you can type without looking at the keyboard.

Chad... I couldn't agree any further on your point with being able to touch physical keys/buttons. I had a Razr(who didn't) and the virtually missing keys were a pain. Of course, maybe it was a good way to get people to stop driving and dialing. It'll be a while before I switch phones again though.. currently addicted to my crackberry.

iPhone is an interesting toy, but honesty... for such money I don't think that it's so good.

Barry, you're a fool. The iPhone with service costs less than your Crackberry.
